At the Skin and Vein Center, we are often asked about the differences between Vaser Lipo and SmartLipo.
Essentially, there are many differences, as well as many similarities. Both procedures use the tumescent liposuction procedures, but use different types of tools. Tumescent liposuction uses a solution consisting of epinephrine, lidocaine, and saline that is injected into the fat layer to cause it to swell. The fat is then suctioned away using various methods including SmartLipo and Vaser.
The Main Differences Between SmartLipo and Vaser
While both procedures use the tumescent liposuction technique, the main difference is, as was previously stated, the type of tools used.
SmartLipo is also known as laser-assisted liposuction and uses the laser to additionally melt the fat deposits prior to being suctioned away. A laser fiber is inserted into the skin using a tiny cannula. This laser energy has also been shown to increase the skin’s collagen production, which leads to skin tightening.
Vaser is also known as ultrasound assisted liposuction. This technique uses ultrasonic waves to separate and soften the fat layer. This procedure requires that the ultrasound wand be placed into the treatment area through a plastic port to prevent burns as the wand becomes very hot during the procedure.
