Gynecomastia occurs in men usually during times of hormonal changes; for instance, about 65% of 14-year-old boys have the condition. In most cases boys will simply grow out of the condition as they become men, but until that time they may face a great danger to their self-esteem – other 14-year-old boys. Another hormonal change at about age 65 causes many of our retirees to develop the condition. Still others develop it at other times in their lives for a variety of reasons.
Recently the TV show The Doctors brought awareness and hope to gynecomastia sufferers everywhere. On the May 10th episode, Dr. Elliott Jacobs used liposuction to remove the excess fatty tissue from the breast of a 15-year-old boy who was being teased at school about the condition. He made a small incision at the edge of the nipple and removes over 2 pounds of fat from the student’s breast. Full recovery is expected in just a few weeks.
As always, patients should consult their own doctors before undergoing a procedure such as liposuction. It is important to be sure that gynecomastia, and not a more dangerous disease, is the cause of an enlarged breast. Having consulted with a doctor, ask if liposuction is a viable option. You may soon be saying goodbye to man boobs!
