If you could have any cosmetic correction, what would it be? According to a recent survey, most everyone wants to get rid of excess weight. Surprised? Neither are we! The survey, conducted by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) this year, reports that more than 4 out of 5 people admit that extra body weight bothers them more than any other cosmetic concern, including wrinkles around the eyes, skin texture/discoloration, and more.
Survey Says
The 2013 ASDS Consumer Survey on Cosmetic Dermatologic Procedures was a blind online survey that asked 6,300 consumers their opinion about cosmetic surgery in general and to rate 10 cosmetic procedures. According to the results, almost 30% are considering a cosmetic procedure and the top reasons for doing so include wanting to look as young as they feel, to boost confidence, and to be more attractive. What’s interesting is the clear and overwhelming connection for weight loss that consumers make to achieving these goals. A total of 83% said excess weight bothers them the most—the clear front runner compared with other cosmetic concerns, including lines and wrinkles around the eyes (63%), skin texture and/or discoloration (62%), sagging facial skin (61%), excess fat under the chin (60%), lines/wrinkles/folds near cheeks/mouth (60%), lines and wrinkles on the forehead (51%), lines and wrinkles between the eyebrows (50%), hair loss (41%), and acne scars (24%).
Time Treat Yourself
If you’re one of the many who want to say sayonara to excess fat, there’s great news on the treatment landscape today. From tumescent liposuction for safe, in-office, large-volume fat reduction to non-surgical radio frequency energy or cryolipolysis for body contouring, many minimally invasive options are literally at your fingertips for fat reduction and body contouring.
“Excess body fat is a leading concern for our patients for health as well as beauty reasons,” said ASDS President Timothy C. Flynn, MD, in a press release. “ASDS member dermatologic surgeons have been at the forefront of this battle by pioneering and perfecting minimally invasive body sculpting techniques such as tumescent liposuction.”
