Liposuction and Cellulite – Myths and Alternatives
There are many people out there who think that liposuction will get rid of cellulite, and sadly, they are mistaken. Cellulite is actually a breakdown of the connective tissue that holds women’s subcutaneous fats. Women have more fat than men to sustain pregnancy, and when women gain and lose weight, or because of genetic factors, the connective tissue can fail, giving the appearance of bumps characterized by cellulite. While liposuction can contour the overall shape of a thigh, and remove fat from stubborn areas, it does not necessarily cure cellulite or even reduce it.
Recently, there was an interesting article in The Santa Barbara Independent about an alternative treatment for cellulite that has been used for several years in Europe. Now FDA approved for use in the United States, endermologie uses massage to reduce cellulite and even to reshape thighs. Endermologie helps the structure that holds fat cells to repair itself, thereby reducing the appearance of cellulite. The technology was actually developed by Frenchman who had to undergo months of physical therapy and massage to recover from an injury to his cervical spine. This treatment was designed for and has had success treating damaged muscular tissue, rehabilitating burn patients and healing scars and in the midst of carrying out these treatments, they discovered the massage machine and technique also reduced cellulite.
When you undergo the treatments, you actually have to wear a unitard like suit to ensure that the massage machine doesn’t catch on your skin, and not only do you get the therapeutic benefit of the cellulite reduction but many women have reported a reshaping of their thighs as well. Proponents of the technique cite the analogy of stuffing things into a bag vs. packing an orderly suitcase. The massage repairs the cellular structure, which allows the body to naturally reshape the redistribute fat cells – and sometimes the fat cells even dissipate!
Liposuction is an excellent choice for contouring, slimming and removing unwanted fat pads that are resistant to traditional diets or exercise. It’s always important to understand what liposuction can and can’t do. One of the most important aspects of having any cosmetic surgery is having realistic liposuction expectations liposuction expectations – and working with a doctor who will set your expectations appropriately.
