Liposuction is a surgical procedure used to remove excess fat from the body. A liposuction surgeon makes a tiny incision in the skin where the fat is to be removed, and then inserts a device called a cannula. This cannula breaks up the fat and then removes it using a suction device. There are now even more advanced liposuction techniques using lasers or ultrasound!
The back has five main areas of fat that can be reduced and sculpted using liposuction:
• Infra-scapular fat, which is what bunches up under your bra strap;
• Posterior axillary fat, located near the armpit;
• Posterior waist fat, on the back above the hips;
• The Lumbo-sacral fat pad, which is just above the tailbone,
• And the unfortunately named buffalo hump, located near the neck.
If you think you may benefit from back liposuction, find a board-certified physician is your area. A website such as this one has a directory of excellent surgeons in your area. Your doctor will examine your back and then the two of you will map out a strategy for which areas would benefit from liposuction and how you will proceed.
