When woman decide to make a big change; it’s usually inspired by one revelatory moment. Perhaps she recently lost hundreds of pounds through diet and exercise, but her final goal is eluding her due to excess skin. She may take a look in the mirror and see her mother staring back. Perhaps she understands that she’s missing from all the family pictures, because she hides from the camera. Then there’s the woman who may be asked when the baby is due, and she’s not pregnant. All of these, and many other experiences, can lead a woman to make the decision – it’s time for a change.
At the “aha”moment of realization, a woman will realize that she has many options, and doesn’t have to continue to live with the self-consciousness.
A recent study looked at how these moments occurred. More than 1,800 women were asked what ignited their desire to change their appearance or improve their health.
The numbers and results differed slightly depending on age. The three largest demographics that responded those aged 25-34 with 23% of all answers, 35-44 (26%), and 45-54 (23%).
Women in the 25-34 age range indicated that their prime motivation was motherhood. These women were typically done having children and wanted to have a pre-baby figure. One woman stated, “After giving birth to five children and breastfeeding them each for two years, it was time to reclaim my body as my own.”
For those women who were slightly older —ages 35 to 44, many still wanted to reverse the sights of pregnancy; however, these women were actually more concerned about their overall health. About 18% of respondents said they had health concerns that were often related to weight issues.
Older women said they investigated options because they could see the signs of aging. About 25% of the women between the ages of 45 and 54, listed aging as their prime motivation. This is in comparison with only 14% of 35- to 44-year-olds, and 6% of 25- to 34-year-olds. As one respondent wrote, “Mother Nature isn’t always kind. As I get older I’ve come to realize that feeling good on the inside doesn’t mean much if you look bad on the outside.”
