According to recent survey results from the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, the number of laser procedures for unwanted hair removal rose more than 50% between 2012 and 2014.
According to results from the 2014 ASDS Survey on Dermatologic Procedures, 633,000 laser hair removal procedures were performed by American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) members in 2014. This reflects a 27% increase from 2013 and a 51% increase from 2012.
The survey was held between Jan. 2 and Feb. 6, 2015, for 2014 data. It was generalized to represent all ASDS members and the results are based on 826 physicians (21%) who responded to a link sent to a total of 3,980 ASDS members.
Some of the results included findings that women between the ages of 19 to 36 years, and men aged between18 to 45 years were those most likely to receive laser hair removal. Women were more likely to seek treatments for underarms and bikini line areas, while men seek treatment on backs and necks, said Dr. Thomas Wright, medical director of the Laser Lipo and Vein Center. He continues, “What once was a novel idea is now a sensible convenience.”
Originally, laser hair removal was recommended for dark hairs on light skin. Now, Dr. Wright says, new technologies have made it safer and more effective for various skin tones and hair colors.
While some patients may experience long-term hair removal effects, others may require maintenance treatments to maintain results. Dr. Wright states, “Many people prefer the convenience of the longer-lasting impact of laser hair removal, compared with shaving, tweezing or waxing.”
