Many people suffer from excessive underarm sweating. This condition can lead to embarrassment and awkward social situations. Often, people try to control this sweating through the use of over-the counter and natural remedies such as baking soda or excessive use of antiperspirants. Sometimes, Botox injections are used; however, these are just temporary solutions.
Dr. Eric Seiger and his team at the Skin & Vein Centers currently offer a more permanent and effective solution — miraDry. The miraDry procedure offers patients a way to eliminate that excessive underarm sweating permanently.
Excessive sweating, also called hyperhidrosis, can be either a genetic condition or one that is acquired. Focal hyperhidrosis is the inherited condition; while secondary hyperhidrosis can develop anytime and can be caused by a number of factors including medical conditions or even stress.
This condition is either generalized or localized. When it is general, or affecting the entire body it is usually a result of a medical condition. Localized excessive sweating is usually the type that creates excessive underarm sweat, is the type that can be effectively treated with miraDry.
The miraDry procedure uses microwave energy to essentially destroy the sweat glands. A local anesthetic is used during the treatment for comfort. A handheld device is placed on the armpits and delivers the energy. The entire procedure usually takes about 40 minutes to an hour. For the best results, it is recommend that you undergo two treatment sessions — spaced about three months apart.
While most patients will not feel any pain during the treatments, there may be some residual swelling or soreness, which will usually clear up on its own. After the procedure, most people can return to their usual activities; however, it is recommended that strenuous activities be avoided for a few days.
